How to Safely Find a Job Abroad - 8 Principles
Going abroad to work is an opportunity for better earnings, but also a risk of encountering dishonest intermediaries. These eight rules will help you distinguish a good offer from a trap.
1. Never pay for a job
A reliable employer or employment agency does not charge candidates fees for recruitment, "arranging a job," or listing. If someone asks for a transfer before you leave, decline and report the advertisement.
2. Check who the employer is
The advertisement should include the company's name. You can check a Polish company by its NIP in the KRS or CEIDG, and a foreign company in the commercial register of the relevant country. On Woorking, each company is verified in registers before the first offer is published.
3. Clarify the rate in detail
Ask whether the rate is gross or net, per hour or per month, how many hours per week the schedule includes, and how overtime is paid. The difference between 15 EUR gross and 15 EUR net per hour is several hundred euros monthly.
4. Request a written contract
The contract should be in a language you understand and specify the position, workplace, salary, working time, and employment period. Do not leave on a "contract to be signed on site."
5. Ask about accommodation and its cost
Often the employer provides lodging but deducts its cost from your salary. Find out how many people share a room, the monthly cost, and whether the fee is charged during holidays.
6. Check transportation and coordinator
Who arranges transport to the country and workplace? Is there a coordinator on-site who speaks Polish? This is especially important when going abroad for the first time.
7. Protect your documents
Do not send scans of your ID or passport before you know the company and receive a written offer. Never hand over original documents "for safekeeping."
8. Write down emergency contacts
Note the employer’s address and phone number, the Polish consulate in the destination country, and the emergency number 112, which works throughout the European Union.
