Gross, net, hourly rate – how to compare job offers
€20 per hour or €3000 per month? Gross or net? Offers present rates in different ways. Before you choose, convert them to a single measure.
Gross and net
Gross is the amount before tax and contributions. Net is what goes into your account. The difference depends on the country and family situation – in Western European countries deductions usually range from around 10% to over 30%.
Hourly, weekly, monthly
To compare an hourly rate with a monthly salary, multiply the hourly rate by the number of working hours in a month. For a 40-hour week, that's about 173 hours. Example: €18 gross per hour × 173 hours = about €3114 gross per month.
Overtime and bonuses
Check whether overtime is paid and how much, if there are bonuses for night or weekend work, as well as other premiums. On Woorking, employers list these under the "Bonuses and allowances" and "Overtime" sections.
Cost of accommodation and commuting
Subtract from your salary what you will pay for lodging, commuting, and food. An offer with a lower rate but free accommodation may give you more money "in hand" than a higher rate but an expensive room.
Payment frequency
Getting paid weekly, biweekly, or monthly – this is especially important at the start when you need to cover your first month’s expenses.
In the job offers search you can filter offers by rate, currency, and accommodation.
